Nearly 1,000 individuals have lost their lives in Gaza since the ceasefire began in October, according to the health ministry.
Israel states that it is focusing on Hamas and other militant groups that present a danger, and that its actions are a response to ceasefire breaches, including sporadic assaults.
The health ministry reported on Sunday that close to 1,000 people have died in Gaza since the ceasefire took effect. Five Israeli soldiers have also been killed during the truce period.
The total death toll since the conflict started now stands at 73,001, based on the health ministry's data. More than 173,200 people have been injured since the war began on October 7, 2023, following the Hamas-led incursion into Israel. That attack resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths and the capture of 251 hostages.
The health ministry, which operates under the Hamas-led administration, is comprised of medical personnel and keeps comprehensive records that are generally considered trustworthy by United Nations agencies and independent analysts. It does not differentiate between civilians and combatants but notes that women and children account for roughly half of all casualties.
Israel asserts that it strives to minimize civilian harm and attributes civilian deaths to Hamas, arguing that the militants operate within densely populated zones.
